SOUVENIRING FUTURES – Transition is part of a collaboration project between two artist-run galleries, the Stockholm-based Studio 44 and the Helsinki-based Galleria Huuto. Both Studio 44 and Galleria Huuto celebrate their 10th anniversaries and therefore some of the artists have been invited to Finland to hold an exhibition at Galleria Huuto’s new premises in Jätkäsaari. In the fall of 2012, Galleria Huuto visited Studio 44 in connection with the I see exhibition. The aim of the project is to utilize our common experiences, establish new contacts and promote the creation of a stronger and more open Nordic art scene.
Thematically the exhibition deals with the many transitions between countries which have been an important part of Finland and Sweden’s history. It is the journey, the transition, that holds the central role in the exhibition in order to illuminate the physical and mental middle ground which is created during a transition between two places. We are heading towards a future that has not yet been experienced and at the same time the memory of what we left behind is very much present.
The act of acquiring a souvenir happens in the present. A souvenir is an item that fits into a suitcase and connects a memory to the present time. Just like an interesting exhibition can be imprinted on your mind, a souvenir also includes a hope of a future where one can look back and remember a fabricated picture. Objectifying or visualizing the future is a working method that artists are very familiar with. If we make the possible paths ahead of us more concrete, use symbols with a view to the future, we will be less scared of taking part in this constantly changing world.
The exhibition has been supported by:
Iaspis (The Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s International Program for Visual Artists) and The Swedish–Finnish Cultural Foundation
